There was traffic gridlock on one side of Isheri Road in Ogba, Lagos. The other side was free. So, some drove along and ignited fire works to usher in the New Year as Christians rushed into churches to offer prayers.

As Mills & Boon marks the end of its centenary year, the romance publisher is still selling millions of copies. Its 200 staff writers have something in common - they're all women, except for one. So how does a gruff former rugby player Yorkshireman writing under the pseudonym Gill get away with it?

BITTER-Sweet: My Life With Obasanjo is a modest little book by Oluremi, first and now ex-wife of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the ambitious soldier and pretentious politician who troubled Nigeria for much of his adult life. With creative design and paragraph spacing this rambling little book is stretched ponderously for all of 130 pages – itself not ambitious – and loaded with materials which if the book had been a serious project should never have found their way into print.

She never thought her case could be heard. But Adejoke Martins (not exactly her name) had lived in perpetual fear of sexual abuse for over two years. Now eight years old, Adejoke had been abused sexually in the stead of her parents in Lagos severally. She could not complain about her ugly experience to her parents; neither could she share her nightmares with her confidants until she could no longer endure.

The Olojo is one of the annual festivals celebrated in Ile-Ife, hub of the Yoruba-speaking people in South-Western Nigeria. Olojo, which literally means “the owner of the day,” is a day set aside to celebrate creation and make offerings to the creator in thankfulness. Ile-Ife, believed to be the cradle of the entire Yoruba race, enjoys ascendancy in all cultural and historical matters among the tribe. Besides, the monarch of Ile-Ife is considered a direct descendant of the deity, who is accorded the status of progenitor of the entire human race.

THE U-17 FIFA World Tournament’s scandal can be swept under the carpet, but up to a point. It is widely believed that its backwash swept away the mighty former Director-General of Sports, Amos Adamu, from his seat. But would that be enough?
To have casually quoted such an outlandish figure running into multiple of billions of naira, cannot be accepted as a mistake, or the result of careless computation, especially from those who are accounted to be accredited experts.

Some unidentified gunmen suspected to be militants on Thursday raped 28 female youth corps members in Abonnema, a town in Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
A source said the militants invaded the residence of the corps members, who were posted to the town on primary assignment, and rounded up the ladies. He said the suspected militants went into every flat, raping the women at gunpoint after which they fled through the waterfront. He noted that Abonnema residents had been constantly terrorised by gangsters who relocated to the area after they were sacked from some of their locations in the creeks.

Not many observers gave Globacom a chance when it set up shop on August 29, 2003, in a market where MTN and then Econet (now Zain) already had a head start.
The fear was real even to industry analysts who cited the early reverses which CIL, the promoters of Glo mobile telecommunication outfit had experienced, losing 20 million U.S. dollars for missing the payment deadline for an operating licence in the 2001 Global System for Mobile telecommunications (GSM) auctions by a day!

Kenule "Ken" Beeson Saro-Wiwa (October 10, 1941 – November 10, 1995) was a Nigerian author, television producer, and environmentalist. He was the son of Chief Jim Wiwa. Saro-Wiwa was a member of the Ogoni people, an ethnic minority whose homelands in the Niger Delta have been targeted for oil extraction since the 1950s. Initially as spokesperson, and then as President, of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Saro-Wiwa led a nonviolent campaign against environmental damage associated with the operations of multinational oil companies, especially Shell.
He was executed by the Nigerian military in 1995, his death provoking international outrage.

If any proof was needed about the bleak future facing the nation’s educational system, the latest West African Examination Council (WAEC) School Certificate Examinations is one. The result of the May/June examination, usually organized by the WAEC shows that out of the 1,369,142 that sat for the examination, only 188,442 candidates (representing 13.76 per cent) passed with five credits in English Language, Mathematics and three other subjects. That means that about 83 per cent of the candidates failed to make the required five credits pass for entry into any of the Nigerian universities.
